Workmob – Connecting Co-workers in a Way They Want

To be or not to be, that is the question – This eternal question by Shakespeare is still relevant in our times. Wondering how?  Well, what we contemplate today the most is to be or not to be friends with our coworkers on Facebook. And our dilemma just doesn’t end there; to further complicate things there’s a huge list of dos and don’ts even if we were to do it.

So instead of bringing a whole new list of how to do it better and what not to do, we went ahead to build a new platform itself for coworkers to connect, share, laugh, and post.  No it isn’t your enterprise social network like a Yammer or the upcoming Facebook at Work. Nor is it a work collaboration tool like Slack or HipChat. We decided to leave that best to the guys who know how to do enterprise best. We are social beings at heart, and we know best to build products that connects the heart. Ooh, and in case you didn’t notice, we are good at writing cheeky lines as well. 😉

We digressed. Coming back to it, and without any further ado, let us introduce to you workmob.com – A brainchild of a few coworkers at ArcGate Inc., an outsourcing company with over 900+ employees, who didn’t know how to say “no” to accepting friends requests of their coworkers on Facebook, of having to manage two lives on Facebook – personal and professional (if at all they went ahead to accept a few friends requests by a few selective coworkers), of taming down their thoughts in order to post and not offend a coworker who is a friend on Facebook.

Well, we can go on and on but you get the gist, right? We wanted to cut ourselves some slack of managing our mix of friends and coworkers on a social network, and avoid the paranoia around which coworkers to friend and whom not to. What to post and what not to. We wanted to make an attempt to answer the question – to be or not to be. Not for Shakespeare but for people who face the dilemma of friending their coworkers on Facebook.

Hang on though, before you get us all wrong! It isn’t that we don’t want to be friends with our coworkers. We do! Like for sure – yes! We also understand, all work and no play, makes “Jack” a dull boy.

After all if it wasn’t for all that, why would we at ArcGate set out to build workmob? We created workmob to give our workplace a touch of social without having to think too hard on the dos and don’ts. We wanted to share and connect in a way which was “comfortable” for both us and our coworkers. We did the math to realize we spend a third of our lives at work, and by that it would be fair to say that each employee at ArcGate is like an extended family. But clearly that wasn’t enough. We realized we couldn’t really go about introducing ourselves to everyone in the company. And even if managed to do so, that would have just ended at: a-one-time-Hello! We really gave that thought a lot of thought, and then set out to build a tool which we could use to at least know each other better, share a few jokes, some insightful insights, etc. while being at our desks; without having to read into a long list of dos and don’ts of friending your coworkers on Facebook.

And so, it was time to say Hello to WorkMob!
