Friends at Work – For sure, We Need Them

It’s 2015! Workmob is now a few months old. We at ArcGate have come a long way from conceptualization of workmob.com, or so do we think, but nonetheless, it has been a process! We have felt many different ways during this entire process. You often hear the analogy that startups are like newborns; and we agree that the analogy best describes how we have felt during the process.

Here are a few words that highlight our ride so far: passion, attention, attachment, nurturing, as well as fear, defeat, rejection and regret. That said, we would like to acknowledge and admit that: It’s been a great journey so far, and we are tremendously happy to continue with it. The team has worked relentlessly towards the success of the project from the get-go. It’s this outstanding hard work of the team, which not only improves our chance of success, but also be happier along the way!

That brings us to the question:

Why is it incredibly important to have friends at work?

Stepping out for lunch with a coworker or sharing a few laughs with your manager is not only a distraction in the long 8 hour work day, but it has an enormous impact on your work life.

A few studies show that employees with friends at work are more passionate and loyal to their companies. Having friends at work not only increases employee engagement, but also leads to employee satisfaction. Workplace friends are better than acquaintances, and friends are easier to work with! Connecting with a colleague on a personal level can motivate employees to work harder. They are more comfortable seeking help and pointing out mistakes or errors. Friends at work can leverage on each other’s personal strengths, and work well as or with a team, instead of operating in silos.

The right balance of socializing in a workplace can support happy employees who are passionate about their work and are fully engaged.

So go ahead, find and make friends at work!
